Over the weekend, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas held a ceremony announcing the appointment of Shawn Harris as the city’s new Commissioner of Public Safety, while also announcing the addition of more than a dozen new probationary officers for the department.
Harris, a longtime police veteran who served in Iraq under Operation Iraqi Freedom will take the helm of a department that has steadily reduced crime levels over the past two years, according to Thomas.
“The addition of 15 new probationary officers brings the Mount Vernon Police Department to over 200 officers for the first time since the department was cut in fiscal year 2016 and represents ongoing growth in the department,” Thomas stated. “The administration is encouraged by the support that the incoming City Council has shown the department, and we are hopeful they will continue to work with us.”
